Description: Comprehensive course on retirement planning and strategies. The course meets online Tuesdays at 6pm ET for 10 weeks starting Tuesday September 9, 2025. 

R.O.C.K.I.N.G. Retirement Course Overview

Session 1: Redefining My Purpose in Retirement

Topic focus: How to transition from a career identity to a purpose-driven life in retirement.

Define and discuss: Passion and purpose, goal setting, moving forward with intention, and writing a eulogy to live by. 

Why it matters: Many retirees struggle with a loss of identity or direction. Physical and emotional health can suffer as a result. Defining your “why” in retirement is foundational to a successful retirement season.

Session 2: Financial Well-being and Security

Topic focus: Budgeting, managing income streams, minimizing debt, and legacy planning.

Discuss: Saving and investing through the retirement years, budgeting, taxes, talking to the right people about an asset portfolio and estate planning; saving money on taxes.

Why it matters: Financial stability can be either a stressor or a source of confidence for retirees. You will do better financially when you understand how to best manage your estate and finances long-term. Financial stability can improve your physical and emotional well-being.

Session 3: Physical Health and Wellness Planning

Topic focus: Changes to physical health, preventive care, nutrition, and staying active.

Discuss: What we need to know about changes to our bodies as they age; how to keep our mind and body going. Make a personal plan for long-term health. Resources to help you get and stay healthy. 

Why it matters: Good mental, spiritual, and physical health enables freedom and quality of life during retirement. Getting ourselves in good shape will enable us to be of service to others 

Session 4: Mental and Emotional Resilience

Topic focus: Navigating emotional shifts, dealing with loneliness, anxiety, or depression.

Discuss: Where to get help if you need it; how to be a support for others; changes to the aging brain, how diet and exercise relate to mental and emotional health, healthy habits to improve mood and memory.

Why it matters: Mental health is just as critical as physical health, in some cases even moreso. We need to be strong mentally and emotionally in order to maintain overall good health, especially as we age.

5. Time Management and Daily Rhythm 

Topic focus: Creating meaningful routines, balancing rest with productivity.

Discuss: Why it is important to have a daily schedule, and how to create a schedule that works for you, when to say “yes” and when to say “no”. 

Why it matters: Retirees often feel lost or depressed without the structure of a regular work schedule. Creating a schedule can help us in getting us up and moving, avoid depression, and achieve our goals.

6. Building and Maintaining Relationships

Topic focus: Nurturing family, friendships, and social circles; dealing with changes in relationships.

Discuss: Empty nesting, building relationships with adult children and grandchildren, developing social circles outside of the workplace, setting healthy boundaries with loved ones.

Why it matters: Social connection strongly correlates with longevity and happiness.

7. Exploring Hobbies, Travel, and Lifelong Learning

Topic focus: Discovering or rediscovering passions, skills, and new adventures.

Discuss: Determine the best way to spend your time, activities and travel for seniors.

Why it matters: This is a time to enjoy life—encouraging growth keeps the mind and spirit alive.

8. Leaving a Legacy and Generativity

Topic focus: Volunteering, mentoring, storytelling, and estate planning.

Discuss: Family legacy, living a meaningful life with intention.

Why it matters: Legacy is what we pass on to others. Many retirees want to leave something meaningful behind—this gives life richness.

9. Navigating Transitions and Unexpected Changes

Topic focus: Flexibility through health changes, loss of a spouse, moving, or caregiving.

Discuss:  Planning for the unexpected.

Why it matters: Helping people prepare mentally and practically for change is empowering.

10. Creating a Personal Retirement Vision

Topic focus: Bringing it all together—designing a fulfilling, balanced retirement lifestyle.

Discuss: Short and long-term goals, using a daily planner.  

Why it matters: Ending the course with action-oriented planning ensures momentum and clarity.
